Most people think about self-care as spending your whole day pampering yourself, reading a book and eating delicious food. But in reality, with the weekday work and weekend chores, we don’t have that much time for a full splurge.

But this doesn’t mean that you should all-together forget about taking care of yourself. With only 5 minutes of your time, you can do these self-care ideas if you like to take a quick break and feel like yourself again.

1. Listen to your Favorite Song

Open up your favorite artist’s album and play that song. Listening to music can help boost up your mood and make you feel good.  Music has become more than just a form of entertainment— it has become a source of therapy to some people.

2. Clean your Desk or Workspace

Cleaning your workspace creates an environment that feels peaceful and bright. Take a quick break by organizing your stuff and try placing some images that inspire you. After all, you workspace can have a significant impact on your productivity.

3. Massage your Shoulders and Neck

Feeling a bit sore? With all the ‘sitting all day’ and ‘responding to a lot of emails’, a quick self-massage won’t hurt you (it can actually relieve you more). Place three fingertips on the back of your neck where your neck and shoulders meet, and press firmly. Repeat until your muscles feels more relaxed.

4. Doodle

There are a number of mental benefits that can be gained from allowing your pen to freely roam around your paper. One of it is it can be an avenue for stress reduction. Doodling anything can be a great way to tap into the unconscious mind. This can also help you organize your thoughts if you are feeling particularly lost, thus reducing stress.

5. Pet a Dog/Cat

I think we’ll all agree that watching a bunch of puppies do the head tilt or a cat playing with its fur ball will surely make you smile. If you haven’t notice, your pet knows when you’re upset, and they always want to help you. Have a short playtime with them (and why not give them a hug as well). This will 100% make you feel a lot better that a minute ago. (But if you can’t pet one right now, try watching videos of them being an instant serotonin boost)

6. Read

Reading is one of the best way to overcome stress and it can even help you prevent certain forms of dementia. Reach out to your nearest book and read at least 2 pages (or maybe a chapter) of it. It can help your mind restart ideas and turn on your creative and imaginative thinking.

7. Get Fresh Air

If you’ve been working non-stop in your work station or in your room, try stepping out for a bit and get a deep breath of fresh air. Fresh air and sunlight can help improve your well-being. As your lungs take in more fresh air, the oxygen levels in your blood go up; and having high oxygen level means more of it circulates to your brain. This results to an improvement of your ability to concentrate and remember information.

8. Drink a Glass of Water

Water is a very important component of our lives, more important than most people realize. Without enough water, we could become dangerously dehydrated and unable to maintain healthy bodily functions. So take a quick walk to your pantry or your kitchen and drink a glass of water.

9. List Down Things that Makes you Happy

Every time that you start thinking negatively, you should stop for a second and think about all the great things in your life that you have to be grateful for. Take a pen and a paper and write down things or thoughts that makes you smile. Instead of thinking of all the things you don’t have, think about what you do have and all the great people surrounding you.

10. Stretch

Stretching can help you decrease muscle soreness and back pain. If you need some relaxation after work, or to prepare you for a busy day ahead, try stretching out your body for a few minutes.

11. Look Away

Ever heard about the 20-20-20 rule? Basically, every 20 minutes you should look away at something that is 20 feet away from you for a total of 20 seconds. This can help your eyes to be completely relaxed. Make sure to set up an alarm every 20 minutes so as not to forget (if you’re too absorbed into your work).

12. Drink a Hot Cocoa

A mug of hot cocoa will warm your tummy and your hands, perfect for this chilly day. Hot cocoa is packed with health benefits such as antioxidants and it can reduce the risk of heart attack. But most of all, Chocolate contains many secrets to happiness and it can make you feel good since it contains mood-lightening serotonin.

13. Walk Around

Sitting for long stretches of time is unhealthy for you and can be one of the factors in having a sedentary lifestyle. take a quick stroll around your office or in your home reduce the life-shortening effects of oversitting. This can also help you have a simple exercise even for a short period of time.

14. Close your Eyes

Closing your eyes can help calm your mind and relax your muscles and organs. This also essentially tells your body that it should take a break from thinking. Straining your eyes by continuously working or checking your device can result to blurry vision. So break your poor vision habits by resting your eyes.

15. Make a small connection

Have a few sentences of conversation with yourself. Yup, you read it right. It’s actually totally normal (and healthy) to talk to yourself. Explaining your tasks to yourself aloud can help you focus and even think of other things you might have forgotten. It can also help you process difficult feelings that you might have been bottling up for a long time.

 

Self-care shouldn’t eat much of your time. Make it a habit to incorporate at least one of these ideas in your daily routine, and it will make a significant impact in your life.
